Earlier this year we had the pleasure of redesigning one of our member's websites - LAW. LAW is a fantastic musician, songwriter, mix mastering engineer & producer, based in the Midlands in the United Kingdom. LAWs music mostly sits in the realm of electronic/ alternative/ synthwave/ new retro wave/ industrial, with influences of trance & ebm.
Assessing her site
LAW had a great start to her site and we could see her tapping into the palette usually associated with synthwave and retro wave. She also had her site pretty well organized, so we decided we would concentrate on the aesthetics of the site when redesigning.
Style
We needed to find a colour scheme, and look, that would complement LAW's content. We saw a lot of bright, bold, neons, with cyber/electro 'vibes', so it made sense to design around this. We eliminated the green in her current site and concentrated on the bold magenta/pink tones and built out our palette from there, mixing in more subtle blues and purples.
The "LAW magenta" would become our call to action color and used to draw attention to key areas of the page such as buttons and links:
Choosing a website template
We chose to switch her website to use our Resonance template as the frames/border would help to contain the bold colors that were to come. Changing the template doesn’t affect her content already in place, but provides a new framework to design around.
The Header
We wanted to be sure to express the energy LAW’s music emotes, so a video header seemed fitting. We took the theme of her EP "Cyber City" and used a perfect Creative Commons licensed stock video from YouTube.
We had to do some light editing to make it appropriate for the header. To do that, we trimmed the video so only the city area was showing. We used a free account on the handy Kapwing.com to crop the video and export.
Homepage Intro Section
On LAW’s Homepage, we added a short and snappy intro section telling visitors who she is, and what she does, plus all of her social media links. This links out to a more in-depth musician bio.
News/Blog Section
The next section on the Homepage is a place to house all of LAW's latest news. We took the color theme a little further and exported a still image of the video so we could use it as a section background in different parts of the site. This image was added to the News section, where LAW maintains an active blog with news and updates.
EP Section
We thought a dedicated section to her EP would help it stand out on the Homepage. To spice up the album art we downloaded a free album mockup and added LAW's EP artwork to it. This image was added to an Image and Text feature, along with links to streaming services.
We also included a button with a link to all of her other music, which is on her music page.
Video Section
To promote LAW's videos, we made a video section, with one large video and a link to all her other videos on her video page. We used the same section background image from the News section above.
Mix & Mastering Section
We wanted to be sure to call out LAW's mixing and mastering services on the homepage as it's an important conversion point for her. So we dedicated a whole section to this service with a clear call-to-action as well as a contact link.
As usual, stock photography site Unsplash came through in a pinch to give us a suitable and free image to add into an Image and text feature here.
Then, to make the stock image feel at home within the look and feel of the new site we applied a filter using the filter tools in our Image feature. No photoshop needed!
Adding a Footer
The Footer area can be a great place to give your website visitors more info and calls-to-action. We added a mailing list sign up, plus legal copy, and a mention to the creator of the stock video in the header. These carry across every page on her website.
Once again we used the same background image and style as the Video and News sections to give the overall page a cohesive look and feel.
The Completed Site
We had a great time listening to LAW’s music to get a feel for her style, and from there, re-working her design to breathe new life into her website. You can see it live at: https://www.lawmusic-online.co.uk
